Notes on travelling to Lancaster, accommodation, etc. for the Management Board meeting, Lancaster, Nov 2012

Here is information on getting from the city to the University by bus

28-29 November 2012, lunchtime to lunchtime

The meeting will take place at CEH Lancaster (Lancaster Environment Centre, Library Avenue, Bailrigg, Lancaster, LA1 4AP). We are located on the campus of Lancaster University. The Lancaster House Hotel is also on the campus, about 5 minutes walk away. See here for information, maps, etc:

We have booked rooms at the nearby Lancaster House Hotel. The rate is 82 GBP (101 Euro) per night, B&B. We can help find alternatives if you prefer, though the choice is limited. Lancaster House Hotel is just 5 minutes walk from CEH Lancaster and a short bus or taxi ride into the city centre. For more information on Lancaster House Hotel see:

The nearest airport is Manchester (MAN), which you can reach in one or two hops from most major European airports.

There are trains from the airport to Lancaster. You can check times and book tickets here: (the stations codes are MIA and LAN). The direct trains to Lancaster take about 1 hour 15 mins. Some services involve changing at Preston.

There are maps of the rail network here:

From Lancaster station to the hotel & CEH

Once in Lancaster there are frequent bus services up to the University campus and the hotel, or you can take a taxi. You should allow about 30 minutes from the city to the campus. Here are some useful links:

The main daytime services between city and University are 2, 2A, 3, 3A, 4 and X1. The X1 service departs from the railway station but only runs until 17:40. The best place to catch the other services is Common Garden Street, which is by Lancaster Market.

It takes under 10 minutes to walk to Common Garden Street. Leave the station through either main exit and follow the road up the hill to join Meeting House Lane where you turn left, following signs to City Centre. At the traffic lights beside Waterstones Book Shop you come to King Street which you should cross and then turn right to walk past the Market Building and then turn left into Common Garden Street. The route is shown on this map. There should be a bus stop signed for the University, and you can take any bus labelled 'University'. You pay the driver on entry (they prefer the correct change or small denomination notes). The journey takes about 20 minutes unless there is heavy traffic.

On campus, most buses stop at the Underpass. From there, the simplest way to walk to the hotel is this: step off the bus and turn right. Walk up the slope until you reach a small roundabout. Turn left. You will walk past Library Avenue, Farrer Avenue, some netball courts and Gillow Avenue (all on your left). Cross using the zebra crossing and go through a small wooden gate onto a lane. The hotel is just opposite you (the main gates are just to the right). You can download campus maps from here:

You can catch taxis from the railway station. I think most wait outside the entrance from Platform 3, which should be the platform you arrive on if coming from Manchester. If in doubt, ask a member of staff. Be prepared to pay cash as they may not take cards.

Evening meal

There will be an evening meal at the Gatehouse Restaurant, Lancaster on Wednesday 28 November at 7:30 pm. Please could Management Board members indicate to Gaynor Greenwood their meal choice, as the restaurant would like to know in advance.

More useful information

There is good travel information on the Lancaster University website. See:

Please note that there is a good Sports Centre on campus with pay-and-play facilities. You could have a swim, a sauna, a game of squash, tennis, etc. For details see:

The location of CEH Lancaster is marked, and the hotel is also shown, a little further south. It's a 5 minute walk between the two. I suggest you use the main entrance on Library Avenue (it's one of those revolving doors!). Please report to the receptionist on arrival.
