The IENE 2012 International Conference and practical field excursions on ecology and transportation will be held on 21-24 October 2012 in Potsdam-Berlin, Germany. It is organised in cooperation between the Infra Eco Network Europe (IENE), the German Federal Government and the Swedish Transport Administration.
The general theme of IENE 2012 is: “Safeguarding ecological functions across transport infrastructure”.
The conference shall:
- foster a greater understanding of landscape fragmentation and its impact on biodiversity caused by transport infrastructure;
- strengthen the dialogue between scientists and practitioners and help to execute the “No Net Loss” concept of the EU council;
- trigger international collaboration through adopting a final declaration on the willingness to work towards a joint European approach on ensuring ecological functions and processes in the landscape.
Special topics that will be addressed at the conference are:
- Green infrastructure – concepts and implications for the transport sector
- Single-species versus biodiversity approach in mitigation planning
- Best practice in mitigation – experiences from monitoring and evaluation studies
- Vision 2050 – the ecologically sustainable transport system
- The limits in mitigation - when should nature overrule economy
- Public awareness and education - increasing the acceptance for biodiversity values
